Just two games to go in the English Women’s Super League. Chelsea is almost guaranteed to be champions, while we can expect Arsenal and Manchester United to be the other two teams to qualify for the next edition of the Women’s Champions League. For this prediction, I’ll be reviewing the Merseyside Derby match Liverpool W vs Everton W to be played this weekend, May 4th. Although it’s a match that won’t count for much, fans are looking forward to it for pride and honor. Before making any prediction, let’s see how both teams have been performing.
Liverpool W – Another Empty Year
Another season without a top 3 finish for the Reds women, who just can’t seem to be able to emulate the brilliant performances of their male counterparts, crowned Premier League champions recently. With two games to go, Liverpool Women are 6th, with 25 points. They won seven, drew four, and lost nine of their last 20 games, scoring 22 goals and conceding 34. They have the worst goal difference of the top 8 teams (-12).
In their last five games, they conceded on average 2.2 goals! A record Amber Whiteley is certainly not proud of, and needs to make adjustments in the squad in preparation for the next season. We should expect some new signings, especially at the defense.
Youngster Olivia Smith has been one of the top performers for the Reds this season, netting seven goals in 18 appearances. She poses a serious threat with her pace and movements in the box and will be one of the players to look out for in this derby.
Everton W – The Underdog
Currently 8th (same position they ended the last season), Everton will push hard for a better finish. This can only be possible if they win their last 2 games (away to Liverpool and at home against Tottenham Hotspur).
Everton won five, drew five, and lost ten of their previous 20 games, scoring 21 goals and conceding 31 in the process. They have 20 points, 5 less than their opponents of the day.
Everton can be considered an average team because they greatly suffered when they played against teams in the top half of the table. They are winless in the last three games, having conceded two goals per match on average. Midfielder Honoka Hayashi has been one of the key players in Brian Sorensen’s squad, scoring four goals in 19 appearances.
The Head-to-Head Statistics and Prediction
The H2H record shows an almost balanced equation! In 32 meetings (all competitions inclusive), Liverpool Women won 10, Everton FC Women won 14, and 8 ended in draws. Further, in the last four confrontations, Liverpool FC Women won 1, Everton FC won 1, and 2 ended in draws.
