The battle at the top of the Norwegian Eliteserien is fiercer than ever, with just a few points separating the league leaders Viking from the 3rd-placed team Tromsø IL (who have 2 games in hand). Even more fierce are the qualification spots for European competitions, with no team having a significant lead over the others. It’s safe to say there’s still a lot to play for in this league as we head into the next round. My prediction for this week is based on the clash at the top of the table between SK Brann, who are currently second, and the leaders, Viking FK. So, let’s waste no time and dive right into the important statistics as usual.

SK Brann – A Chase After Champions League Qualification

After 17 years of absence from the UEFA Champions League, SK Brann this season is drawing nearer and nearer to a potential qualification for the next edition of the tournament. After 14 matches played, they hold a record of 27 points: 8 wins, 3 draws, 3 losses, 24 goals scored and 21 conceded. However, this is temporary as their direct competitors for this highly converted position could outrank them if they win their pending matches. These are Tromsø IL, currently 3rd with 2 games in hand, on 25 points, and FK Bodø/Glimt, 6th with 3 games in hand on 20 points.

That notwithstanding, the league is only halfway through, and SK Brann is in impressive form. The million-dollar question is “Do they have what it takes to challenge the league leaders, Viking FK, in their next match? This could already prove crucial in their Champions League hopes, because these are the matches they need to take all points from, or at least not lose.

Luckily, they can count on Aune Selland Heggebø’s impressive goal-scoring form and the reliability of experienced players such as Bård Finne.

Looking at recent performance, Brann won 3, drew 1, and lost 1 of their last 5 games. The draw was their most recent result against HamKam, and the scoreline was 1-1. Not exactly the kind of motivation you need before going into a battle against the league leaders.

Viking FK – Toward a Probable Title

With only one match lost so far this season, it’s safe to say Viking FK are serious title contenders. In 15 rounds played so far, they won 11, with 3 draws, scoring 39 goals (more than any other team) and conceding 17. After their back-to-back defeats 3-4 against Viking Start in a friendly and 1-3 against Vålerenga Fotball in the league in March, Viking FK took a different path and never looked back. They’ve not lost a single game ever since in all competitions, recording an incredible 16 wins and 3 draws in 19 consecutive matches. Now, that’s impressive!

Equally impressive is the fact that in their last 4 games, they conceded just 1 goal. That was in their recent draw on the road against Rosenborg. They quickly returned to winning ways by defeating Strømsgodset IF on 5th July 2025.

Zlatko Hovland Tripić has been the main contributor in terms of goals so far, with 8 netted. Beyond the goals scored, he is an experienced player who provides lots of stability up front. He will be one of the players to watch.

Before that decisive encounter against SK Brann, Viking FK will be on the road to face Sarpsborg in the NM Cupen on 9th July 2025. I don’t expect this to be a hard match to handle for coaches Bjarte Lunde Aarsheim and Morten Jensen.

SK Brann vs Viking FK Head-to-Head Stats and Prediction

Viking FK holds a tangible advantage when it comes to the H2H record. They won 20 of the 45 meetings between the two, drew 11, and conceded 14 defeats to SK Brann. However, the recent confrontations paint a different picture. Three draws in 3 matches with scoreline 1-1 on 14.04.2024; 1-1 on 01.12.2024, and 2-2 on 14.02.2025.

A lot has happened since they last met! Viking FK is simply the better team of the two, and I’m backing them @2.74. I don’t think SK Brann currently has what it takes to stop them.
