The U21 European Championship will kick off on June 11, 2025, in Slovakia, and there are some interesting fixtures that we can all look forward to seeing. One of them is the clash between France, champions of 1988 and 2002 finalists, against Portugal, the unfortunate 1994, 2015, and 2021 finalists, to be played at the Sihoť Stadium, Trenčín, Slovakia. Will this 2025 edition be the year Portugal finally becomes champions in this category? For this to happen, they will need to start on a very good note, and their adversary in the tournament opener is also one of the favorites. This fixture provides lots of betting opportunities, but before looking at that aspect, let’s start by reviewing how both teams have been performing.
Portugal u21
Impressively, Portugal has played two finals in the last 5 editions of the tournament. However, they lost both: 4-3 on penalties in 2015 against Sweden, and 1-0 in 2021 against Germany. Coach Rui Jorge is hopeful his boys can find their way into the final and win it this time, but their first challenge will be to overcome a solid French U21 side.
Let’s not be naive here, Portugal U21 is not a group of minnows. They’ve long produced top-drawer talent, and their qualification to this tournament was, in all honesty, very impressive. Nine wins from ten in the group, 33 goals in the process? That’s big-time. Seasoned tactician Coach Rui Jorge enjoys playing an attacking 4-3-3, perfect for the flair and technical ability that comes with Portuguese football.
On a less positive note, their recent positive performances haven’t been good. Defeats against England U21 (4-2) and Romania U21 (0-1) show that they need to up their game to go far in this edition.
Every time we discuss Portugal’s attacking threat, Fábio Silva pops into our mind. This young man was the leading scorer in their qualifying round with a whopping eight goals, showing that he knows where the net is. Club football has also seen him get 10 goals and 3 assists in 24 matches throughout his 2024-2025 season for UD Las Palmas. He is good at getting to the right position at the right moment and has a solid goals-per-90 rate of 0.54. His finishing is sharp, and he’ll be Portugal’s attacking target man. If Portugal is to leave their mark, it’ll need to be in tune. Can he do so against the French defense, though? That’s the million-dollar question.
France U21 AKA “Les Bleuets”
Now, let’s talk about the French. They’ve been in hot form, particularly in their recent friendlies. Comfortable wins over hosts Slovakia U21 (4-0) and England U21 (5-3) say everything about their attacking strength and confidence. Even their recent 2-1 win over Uzbekistan U21 is indicative of a side that loves to play expansive, attractive football.
The new France U21 boss is Gérald Baticle, who took over from legend Thierry Henry in August 2024. Baticle was Henry’s right-hand man, so more of Henry’s aggressive, high-pressing, technically excellent approach should be expected. That consistency is a huge strength.
This French U21 squad is straight-up stacked with players making waves at elite European clubs.
- Rayan Cherki (Lyon): This sorcerer has been a joy to watch. In the 2024-2025 season, he achieved 8 goals and 11 tremendous assists in 30 matches for Lyon. His ability to create chances, run with the ball at his feet, and find the back of the net from unexpected places makes him hell for defenders. He’s the kind of player who can outsmart an obstinate defense with a spark of magic.
- Arnaud Kalimuendo (Rennes): Yet another goal-scoring machine, Kalimuendo has been scoring goals with regularity. For Rennes in the 2024-2025 season, he scored 17 goals and chipped in 3 assists in 33 games. He can play centrally or out wide. He’s clinical, strong, and always a threat inside the box.
- Hugo Ekitike (Eintracht Frankfurt): Ekitike has been incredibly productive in Germany, registering 15 goals and 8 assists in 33 appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt. He is hard to handle with his physical presence, aerial attack, and play off the pass.
- Mathys Tel (Bayern Munich): Despite possibly being restricted to playing time at Bayern by the strong competition, Tel still managed to add 2 goals and 1 assist from 13 appearances. His natural talent, directness, and speed are undeniable. He is a formidable asset, if sometimes off the bench, and can instantly make an impact.
The attacking quality at depth in the French side is just staggering. They have several players who are not only potential young stars but also real contributors in a top club.
An Overview of the Tactical Dispensations
Rui Jorge’s 4-3-3 for Portugal is a decent formation, but against France’s class, it needs defensive responsibility from the midfielders and wingers in order not to be overrun. They are going to try and play through their central midfielders and utilize the pace at the top of Fábio Silva. They will succeed or fail depending on whether they can transition rapidly and defensively cope with France’s fluid attack.
France, under Baticle’s management, will likely retain an aggressive, possession-oriented approach, with quick passing and intelligent movement in the final third. They’ll look to exploit spaces past Portugal’s full-backs and inundate their central defense with a combination of individual skill and collective savvy. The midfield battle will be crucial, but with their attacking and creative options, coupled with the tireless work of their defensive midfielders, France should be capable of controlling the tempo of the game and gaining possession.
Most importantly, France’s depth in the squad is greater. If one of your attacking players isn’t on form, there’s another in reserve who can easily turn the whole game around. This makes it possible to have tactical flexibility and constant pressure over the 90 minutes.
